12 Whailing Season 1950/1951
Airmail
letter sent 7-XI-1950 from Sandefjord. This is addressed to Hr. John Brattås,
working at the floating whale factory “Antarctica”. The agency was located in Walvis
Bay, South West Africa. The Antarctica sailed via Aruba or Curaçao where she
had collected fuel oil, to Walvis Bay for its whalers to pick up, to leave
together to the whaling grounds in the Antarctic waters. She also took mail for
the expedition. The whalers were in Walvis Bay during the Antarctic winter.
Rate
abroad was from 11-15-1949 up to 1-10-1951 to 20 grams 45 øre. Airmail to
Africa was 70 øre per 5 grams from 11/15/1949 to 1-8-1953. The weight was
between 5 and 10 grams. Correct rate 185 øre.
Whale
factory “Antarctic II. Bought by Reder Bruun & von der Lippe Tønsberg in 1945,
and converted into a whale factory. Built in 1913 as an oil tanker San
Greggorio.
